Sealaska and Viking Lumber Complete First Phase of Biomass Energy Potential

Sealaska Corporation and Viking Lumber, Inc. have completed the first phase of examining alternative energy supplies utilizing wood byproducts. In September 2008, Sealaska and Viking signed a letter of intent (LOI) to evaluate wood to energy opportunities in Southeast Alaska. Since then, research has helped determine the potential for a manufacturing plant utilizing wood residues from federal, state, and private forests in Southeast for alternative energy products.

Sealaska Annual Meeting

The Sealaska Corporation Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka, Alaska. The address is 330 Harbor Drive in Sitka, Alaska.

The meeting will begin at 1:00 PM Alaska time. Board of Director candidates’ speeches will begin at 11:30 AM.

If you are interested in running as an independent candidate for Sealaska Corporation’s Board of Directors, call or write to the corporate secretary’s office and request a nominee’s packet. The 2009 Nominee’s Packet is also available online. The deadline for receipt of the nominee forms by the corporate secretary is Monday March 30, 2009.

Sealaska President & CEO Chris E. McNeil, Jr. has joined the Procter & Gamble Supplier Diversity Advisory Council and will serve a three-year term. In this position McNeil joins a representative group of diverse suppliers that have the ability to provide input, feedback and guidance to P&G’s supplier diversity program. P&G recognizes that diversity is an increasingly important part of business strategy around the world.

 

Sealaska has provided manufacturing solutions to companies like P&G since 1997. “We have learned a lot from P & G’s leadership in developing supply relationships with minority owned businesses,” said Chris E. McNeil, Jr., Sealaska president and CEO. “As a member of the P&G Advisory Council Sealaska is able to strengthen its relationship at all levels of with Purchasing Leadership at P&G and assist them to strengthen external relationship with constituency groups.”

Icy Williams, Corporate Supplier Diversity Leader for Procter & Gamble says, “I am very excited about the addition of Mr. McNeil to the Supplier Diversity Advisory Council. His participation will have a positive impact on the vision and mission of the group.”

Approximately 50 language teachers and curriculum developers from across the state and Canada attended the institute's language workshop in Juneau. The 2-day workshop was presented by the institute’s new Education Director Jim MacDiarmid, author of the well-known publication “Replacing Thing-a-ma-jig – the Developmental Language Process.” (News Story) (Blog)

Summer Business Institute for High School Students

Alaska Native and Native American students interested in business have a unique opportunity to learn how finance and accounting relates to Native communities. This summer the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) and the Native American Finance Officers Association (NAFOA) are offering a four-week program geared at high school juniors. Tribal leaders and Native people working in business and finance will introduce students to exciting career opportunities. Students will live on a university campus, participate in interactive classes and corporate site visits conducted by business school professors and corporate executives. Some universities participating include Cornell, Dartmouth and Duke. The application deadline is March 15, 2009.

Shareholder William Johnson Earns Master’s Degree

Sealaska Shareholder William Johnson of Saxman, Alaska recently graduated from Alaska Pacific University with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science.

Johnson began working in the forest industry in the late 1980’s as an intern for Sealaska where he worked in quality control at Sealaska Timber. In 1992 he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from Oregon State University. Johnson later earned his Masters degree with support from Sealaska Heritage Institute, Central Council Tlingit and Haida and the Cape Fox Corporation.

“At first I didn’t believe I had the knowledge to obtain a Masters degree. That changed after encouragement from my guidance counselor,” said Johnson. “I look forward to using my knowledge and skills and hope to work with Sealaska again one day.”

Sealaska Heritage Institute is recruiting for a Senior Grant Writer/Development Director to help plan and implement the fundraising efforts of SHI, a Native, non-profit organization. Looking for expertise in writing proposals for education and cultural projects and/or expertise in soliciting from the private sector. Qualifications: Candidates must have excellent communication, writing, and computer skills. Must be able to handle multiple projects efficiently and mentor new grant writers; BA, minimum five years experience.
